English

SPAG (15 minutes): Prefixes

Prefixes are a group of letters which are added to a root word to make a new word. Prefixes can tell us useful information about a root word. Today you are going to be looking at using the prefixes ‘mid’ ‘pre’ ‘fore’ and ‘non’.

Mid – means middle.

Pre and fore – means before.

Non – means not.

Remember when you add a prefix, the spelling of the root word does not change. Here are some examples.

midfield = the pre fix is mid and the root word is field.

preview = the pre fix is pre and the root word is view.

forethought = the pre fix is fore and the root word is thought.

nonadjustable = the pre fix is non and the root word is adjustable.

Now, complete the following tasks.

Writing (45 minutes): To create a story board

This week we are going to be creative and have a little fun with our English. You are going to create your own story board today using the cartoon in the video below. I want you to recite the story using a range of sentence types and upper level vocabulary. Think about all the openers you can use and all the skills that make your writing exciting. See how much of the success criteria below you can use. Once you have finished watching the video, look at my input below to see how you can complete your task.

  • embedded relative clause
  • multi-clause
  • sentence of three
  • complex sentence
  • similes
  • alliteration
  • adjectival phrases
  • range of openers
  • onomatopoeia
  • speech

Maths

Maths Meeting: Recapping missing angles (15 minutes)

Maths: Decimals (45 minutes)

Today you are going to be answering a combination of questions using decimals. You will be adding and subtracting decimals with a different number of decimal places. Watch my video below to understand today’s task and misconceptions.

Task –

Reading

Reading – Watch the video and then complete the following questions below. Use detail when writing your answers and explain as best as you can.

  • How do you think the Dragon Slayer is feeling as he gets off his horse?
  • How does the Dragon Slayer feel about killing the dragon?
  • What do you think the Dragon Slayer says to himself when he sees the baby dragon?
  • Why is the Slayer reluctant at first to take the baby dragon with him?
  • What does throwing the shield away symbolise?
  • Do you think the Dragon Slayer will look after the dragons forever now?
  • How do you think the people in the village would say to him at the end?

Science

For today’s task, I want you to explore mechanical systems. A mechanism is used in a mineshaft to turn and bring up the materials that are collected from the mine. Where might you find a mine where you live?

We are going to be exploring using a pulley mechanism mixed with a gear mechanism. Watch this video to find out more.

Task –

Draw a mechanism which would pull materials up from a mine and label it. – How does it work?
– How will we use a cog in our mineshaft?
– How does it pull up the materials?
– Why was this useful in mining?

Challenge – Can you make your mechanism in your spare time using materials at home. Can you use a range of materials: cardboard, paper, straw, rope and twigs. Use your straw, rope or twigs to turn the mechanism. Can you get it to work?

Look at this example below to understand your task a little further.

Extra Task – we have come to the end of our forces topic. Have a go of this crossword to see if you have understood our learning over the past 6 weeks.

I am proud of your efforts.

Well done,

Mr Farrier.
